But before you leave would you like to know a little more about Georgia? We have some information that you may find surprising as well as interesting.
Georgia is a state located in the south- eastern part of the United States of America. Georgia is the 24th largest state and the 8th-most populous state in the United States. Georgia is bordered to the north by the state of Tennessee and also by North Carolina, to the northeast it is bordered by South Carolina, and to the southeast by the Atlantic Ocean. To the south by Florida, and then to the west by the state of Alabama. The state’s nicknames include the Peach State and the state is also called the Empire State of the South. The Capital of Georgia is the city of Atlanta. It is also the state’s largest City.
The Atlanta metropolitan area, has an estimated population of 5,949,951. (As at 2018) It is the 9th most populous City in the United States and contains about 60% of the entire state population of Georgia.

Georgia was Founded in 1733 as a British colony, the last and southernmost of the original Thirteen Colonies that was established. The Colony was named after King George II of Great Britain, the Colony of Georgia originally covered the area from South Carolina south to Spanish Florida and all the way west to French Louisiana at the Mississippi River. From 1802–1804, western Georgia was then split to form the Mississippi Territory, which later was divided as the U.S. states of Alabama and Mississippi.
Georgia declared its secession from the (American) Union on January 19, 1861, and it was one of the original seven Confederate States. After the Civil War, Georgia was the last state to be restored to the Union. This happened on July 15, 1870.
Several Georgians, most especially Martin Luther King, Jr., were active leaders during the civil rights movement to end mistreatment of Blacks.

Population – Ethnicity
According to the United States Census of 2010, Georgia had a population of 9,687,653. In terms of race and ethnicity, the state was 59.7% White (55.9% of that figure being Non-Hispanic White alone), 30.5% Black , 0.3% American Indian ( also called Alaska Native) , 3.2% Asian, 0.1% Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander, and 2.1% from two or more mixed races. Hispanics and Latinos also made up about 8.8% of the population.
Many of the 59.7% of the Whites are of European descent.

The largest European ancestry groups are:

  • English: 8.1% of the White Population.
  • Irish 8.1% of the White Population.
  • German 7.2% of the population.

In the 1980 census 1,584,303 Georgians said they were of English ancestry out of a total state population of 3,994,817, making them 40% of the state population, and so the largest ethnic group at the time. Today, it appears that many of these same people claiming that they are of “American” ancestry are actually of English Ancestry, and some are of Scotish or Irish descent; but since their families have lived in the state for so long, some of them since the colonial period, they now choose to identify themselves simply as having “American” ancestry or in some cases they do not know their own ancestry.
Their ancestry sometimes goes back to the original thirteen colonies and for the reason of its long time frame many of them today simply claim “American” ancestry, even if they are of original English ancestry.
As of 2004, 7.7% of Georgia’s population was reported as very young (under 5 years of age), 26.4% as being under 18, and about 9.6% were 65 years old or older. Also, as of year 2004, females made up about 50.6% of the population and Black People made up roughly 30%.
Historically, roughly half of Georgia’s population was composed of African Americans who, before the Civil War, were mostly slaves. However, The Great Migration of hundreds of thousands of Black People from the rural South to the industrial North in order to find work from 1914–70 reduced the African American population of Georgia.——–
Georgia at one time also had the second-fastest-growing Asian population growth in the U.S. That was during the period from 1990 up to 2000, when it more than doubled in population during that ten-year time period.
Furthermore, according to census estimated figures, Georgia ranks third among the states in terms of the percent of the full population that is Black. The only states with a bigger percent of Blacks are Mississippi and Louisiana. As for the Number of Black people Georgia is third, only smaller than New York and Florida. Georgia was the state with the largest growth in the Black population between 2006 to 2007 with 84,000.

The original colonial settlement of large numbers of Scottish descendants, English descendants and Scotch-Irish Americans in the mountains and higlands, and coastal settlement by some people of English Ancestry and of course the Black community, have strongly influenced the state’s culture in the areas of food, language and music.
The concentration of Africans who were imported to coastal farm areas in the 18th century mostly from rice-growing regions of West Africa has led to the development of a kind of language called ‘Gullah-Geechee’ , and also culture in the Low Country among African Americans. They share a unique cultural heritage in which African traditional cuisine, religion and culture were continued more than in any other area in America.
Even today, Georgia remains a kind of Mecca for Africanists, and Black People looking to explore African culture, and to promote Black culture, particularly among the younger generation.
