Insurance, as we have explained severally on this site, is an investment a forward-thinking person makes with a company, a financial institution, or the state, so as to protect himself against any possible or imminent risk. It can further be described as an agreement between a person and an organization such that the organization undertakes to cover the loss or damage, arising from a risk that has been insured, should it happen to the person. Things that can be insured are discussed below:

Life– such that the Organization (subsequently called the insurer or Insurance Company) pays a previously agreed amount of money to the family or any other nominated beneficiary of Person (subsequently called the Policy Holder or Insured Party).

Health– In which case the Insurer agrees to cover the cost of treatment should the Insured party fall sick or get injured. Some insurers work with Health Organizations, such that their clients are directed there for treatment, and then the insurer settles the bill according to an agreed subsidy. Other Insurers may ask the policy holder to seek treatment at any hospital of his choice, and then forward the bill to the insurance office.

Fire Insurance– In which case the Insurer agrees to cover the cost of damages, or the cost of replacing whatever has been damaged or destroyed as a result of an outbreak of fire to the premises of the policy holder that has been insured, as long as it can be proven that the fire was not started by the policy holder.

Car (Motor Vehicle Insurance) in which case the Insurer agrees to cover the cost of repairing or replacing a car or vehicle in the event of an accident.

Third-Party Motor Vehicle Insurance– This is a special agreement in which the insurance company agrees to cover the expenses of compensation to others for harm or injury caused by his use of a car or any other motor vehicle.
