PSL stands for Premier Soccer League and it is the national sports association that is in charge of the administration of South Africa’s professional leagues namely the National First Division and African premier division.

The creation of the Premier Soccer League followed an agreement between the National Soccer League and what remained of the Nation’s Premier Soccer League and it functions as both an organizer of competitions as well as a governing body. After a brief inspection of the Transfer market, the following teams have been deemed to be the richest teams in the Premier Soccer League.

1. Mamelodi Sundowns F.C

The Mamelodi Sundowns are known to have won the PSL a total of eight times since it was started in the year 1996. They also emerged as the champions in the CAF Champions League of 2016 and subsequently became known as the CAF Club of The Year.

The Nedbank Cup has been won by the Mamelodi Sundowns a total of four times and has 3 NFL Championships and is known to be the only team from South Africa to compete in the FIFA Club World Cup where they emerged in 6th place.

The owner of the Mamelodi Sundowns is a billionaire mining magnate known as Patrice Motsepe. The team is nicknamed ‘the Brazilians’ as a nod to their kit which bears a striking resemblance to that of the national football team of Brazil.

The Mamelodi Sundowns were recently named as the Club of the Continent at the CAF Awards of 2017 and they have an estimated net worth of about $11 million.

2. Kaizer Chiefs

With a net worth of $9.1 million, the chiefs are the second richest team in South Africa. The club is based in the city of Johannesburg and is nicknamed “Amakhosi: a Zulu word that translates to “Chiefs” or “Lords”. They are also referred to as the “Phefani Glamour boys” as well.

Their current home matches are now usually played at Soccer City which is located in Nasrec in the city of Soweto (Commonly called the FNB Stadium).

The Kaizer Chiefs are one of the most heavily supported clubs in all of South Africa and in the 2016 – 2017 football season, they were known to have brought in an average home attendance of about 13,686, which was the highest at the time, in the league.

The Kaizer Chiefs have an existing local rivalry with their counterparts, the Orlando Pirates and the two of them are usually engaged in one of the toughest derbies in the world, known as the Soweto Derby. As is common knowledge, in his early football career, Kaizer Motaung, the founder of the Kaizer Chiefs was a player in the Orlando Pirates.

The CAF once banned the Kaizer Chiefs from participating in African club football for a period spanning 2005 to 2009, because of the impromptu withdrawal from the Confederation cup organized by CAF in the year 2005. It was the second time in a period of 4 years that they had received a penalty as a result of their refusal to take part in CAF games that had already been scheduled.

To date, the Kaizer Chiefs remains the most supported team in sub-Saharan Africa and is known to have a fan base of more than 16,000 people. They are also the only team among the 3 top teams in South Africa that does not have a Champions League.

3. Supersport United

This South African football club is owned completely by the South African group of TV Channels known as SuperSport.

SuperSport United was originally known by the name Pretoria City but M-Net bought City in the year 1994, and the following approval is given by the National Soccer League, the club had to be renamed.

Aside from the football team which plays in the Premier Soccer League, there are also some youth academies in the SuperSport United Youth Academy and they all play in various structures organized by SAFA.

This professional South African football club is one of the richest in the Premier Soccer League. It is based in the Houghton suburb in the city of Joburg.

The Orlando Pirates was formed in the year 1937 and used to have its base in Orlando located in Soweto and in the early stages was a dance group for various African Dances. Their name “Pirates” comes from “The Sea Hawk” a movie that came out in the year 1940.

This is a football club out of South Africa that is based in Phokeng which can be found near Rustenburg, North West province. The full owner of the club is the Royal Bafokeng Nation while its nickname is “Dikwena” which is a Tswana word meaning “Crocodiles”. This football club was founded in the year 1998 and has a net worth of about $6.1 million.

7. Cape Town City Football CLub

This club was reformed after the Mpumalanga Black Aces were bought in the year 2016. The original Cape Town City F.C can be traced back to the 1960s however. This South African Premier League Soccer club is currently based in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape although it used to be based in the Nyanga suburb of Cape Town. While the Premier Soccer League and the South African Football Association are affiliated, the South African Football Association does not govern the competitions organized by the Premier Soccer League. Any team that goes into relegation from the divisions organized by the Premier Soccer League goes on to compete in the second division of the South African Football Association.
